Book Launched! – Dawn Garisch’s Once, Two Islands

Dawn Garisch and John CartwrightIn introducing Dawn Garisch at the launch of her novel, Once, Two Islands – her first work of fiction for the adult market – Ken Barris mentioned that, when he first got to know Garisch, he was “immediately struck by the original force of her writing – intense, passionate, and at times intimate”.

The large crowd that squeezed into Julie Aitchison’s Baobab Books for the launch (cocktails in hand!), were then treated to Garisch’s intensity and passion as she read from her book. The novel is loosely based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest – and the listeners doubtless found cause to agree with Barris that, in Garisch’s writing, “each sentence is so beautifully crafted – there’s a music and a cadence”.

The work, to borrow again from Barris’ astute introduction, poses questions about creative power and the costs of having and using one’s creative power. Garisch, for one, has learnt to user hers for others’ delight.
