Videos: Debora Patta vs Julius Malema on 3rd Degree

Debora PattaVS Julius Malema

The World According to Julius MalemaThat Julius Malema is a thorn in many a political side is undoubtedly true. What remains however a source of speculation is the degree to which his oft-times outlandish statements are the proclamations of a misguided youth or the calculated moves of a master politician.

Max du Preez and Mandy Rossouw have recorded some of Malema’s more noteworthy utterances in The World According to Julius Malema. But “the mouth” never sleeps: there’s already almost enough material for a second edition! Said new edition would surely be augmented by Malema’s recent appearance on etv’s 3rd Degree, where he was peppered with hard questions from presenter Debora Patta, who got, in return, well, some fairly fuzzy answers.

I have to say that the scariest aspect of this interview was Debora Patta's shaming manner. I am wincing at how she set up a scenario that reinforced shallow racist stereotypes in an issue that is complex and multi-faceted. This was not eTV's finest hour.

I deeply wish for a significantly more enlightened and compassionate dialogue. We need balanced insightful journalists to clarify the opaque, to make accessible the other viewpoint. It's disturbing to see a strident and essentially mean voice stirring muddy waters into a greater frenzy of disrespect.
