Sunday Times Fiction Prize Excerpt: Sally-Ann Murray’s Small Moving Parts

Sally-Ann Murray’s debut novel, Small Moving Parts, is shortlisted for the Sunday Times Fiction Prize. At the weekend, the newspaper ran an excerpt from the book:

Small Moving Parts

It was not a very promising outlook, but from here, staring until earth appeared another world, Halley watched the harbour at work: the cranes and containers; hoists and gantries and straddle carriers; a tugboat trailing the flaccid, greasy water into a low, churning streamer. She knew the docks were filthy, but from the balcony they shaped a powerful infatuation.

She looked and looked, and found no sign of her father.

Close to, Halley sees raggy wash-lines and flat rooftops, then sweeps down across the park and further on, until the tar-papered parapets of the corporation flats are sucked into smokestacks, factories and warehouses as working-class Umbilo steels and trusses across Congella into Maydon Wharf and Bayhead.
