Food Gurus Get Together for a Taste of Peter Veldsman’s Blissful Bites
Having spent many years working at SARIE magazine as the food editor, mentor and guru to the likes of Carmen Niehaus (current food editor of YOU/Huisgenoot) the luncheon seemed more like a family gathering than a launch!
Emily’s is frequently listed as one of the top restaurants in South Africa and the decor, with its baroque flourishes and opulent paint, reflected the style of the cuisine: ornate, careful and unabashedly decadent.
With prompting from Daleen van der Merwe, Blissful Bites started out as as a reworking of Veldman’s earlier book, Snacks – but as Veldsman says in his acknowledgments, “When I started revising it, I replaced large chunks of the contents and ended up with a completely new book”. How fortunate for foodies! Blissful Bites combines the traditional tastes of local cuisine and “Boerekos” with a completely modern presentation. Calling Veldsman’s food “snacks” is almost misleading. While the food is minimalist in appearance, it is deeply satisfying – like having the nutritional value of a whole meal condensed into a micro-bite. Molecular gastronomy is certainly gestured at, but Veldsman’s approach is more robust.
Perfect not only for snacking, then, but also to be enjoyed as a meals in themselves. Dip your fingers into this delectable read, or pop down to Emily’s for a sampling of what is sure to become a pivotal book in South Africa’s food tradition.
