Business Leader Brand Pretorius Reveals What it Takes to be In the Driving Seat

In The Driving SeatAan die stuurBrand Pretorius knows what it means to be a leader: he held leadership positions at both Toyota South Africa and the McCarthy Group. He knows that leadership means making hard and unpopular decision with an eye on the long term.

In In the Driving Seat, Pretorius writes about the highs and lows of his four decades in business. He traces his journey from the “everything keeps going right” years at Toyota through the restructuring of the McCarthy Group to its final form as highly successful motoring company.

Pretorius gives a rare insight into what it means to do business in South Africa, and how a South African business leader needs to navigate our country’s complexities. He also shows how true leadership can change the country for the better.

The book is also available in Afrikaans as Aan die stuur: My leierskapsreis.

Praise for In the Driving Seat

“A fount of wisdom. This book offers insights not only on leadership in business, but how we can be of service to our communities and wider society and indeed how leadership can impact on the direction of our country.” – Barney Mthombothi, editor of Financial Mail

This great South African demonstrated that servant leadership and business success can be harmonious companions in a competitive world. I hope to emulate his formidable example. – Jonathan Jansen, Rector and Vice-Chancelor of the University of the Free State

About the author

Brand Pretorius is widely known in South Africa as “Mr Motor”. He was marketing head of Toyota South Africa from 1988 to 1995, and then at the head of the McCarthy Group, where he was equally successful.

Originally from the Free State, he graduated from the University of Pretoria with a business degree, after which he moved to Johannesburg. He still lives in Johannesburg with his wife Tillie, and his three business-orientated sons close by.

Brand Pretorius serves on numerous boards, including that of Reunert and McCarthy. He is a popular business speaker and facilitator, and he still finds the time to drive a campaign to get school children reading.
