Jade de Waal Launches Food Jamming with Jade with a Flourish of Flavours

Food Jamming with JadeThe arrival of a new cookery book is always a promising event, but the launch of Jade de Waal’s newest accomplishment, Food Jamming With Jade, was a celebration with a different emphasis – and what an exceptional heart- and belly-warming emphasis it was! The guests at the launch were there to… well… to jam, which has more to do with the concept of musical improvisation than konfyt, so to speak.

Commissioning editor, Daleen van der Merwe, praised the author’s irrepressible energy. “She is passionate about food and music that she combines as she hosts the Food Jams that bring people together to enjoy her bubbly and exuberant nature,” she said. She noted that De Waal was one of the M&G’s 200 young South Africans who are full of talent, dreams and drive, who are making a positive difference to the country.

“Jade’s talent seems to know no bounds,” said Van der Merwe. “An award-winning piano and saxophone student who recently graduated from the South African College of Music, and who also speaks French, Jade has accomplished very much more than most of her 22-year-old peers.”

The celebration of her latest book saw bustling teams of foodies collaborating over tables groaning with brightly coloured ingredients. Specially chosen wines sponsored by Backsberg were paired with each menu item and a grand feast was prepared, with grating, sprinkling, beating and baking. A fabulous frenzy of knives, whisks, peelers and pasta machines were put in service of puffdaddy puff balls, sprouting super salads, patatas bravas, Lebanese chicken, Anel’s mushroom and thyme risotto, golden lamb stew and Yang’s superlative chili chocolate love triangles, to name a few.

Many more treats from the book were measured out, assembled with dizzyingly lovely aromas and sampled with enormous delight. All the while as pots rattled on the stove, prawns sizzled in pans of hot oil and pastry triangles were lovingly folded, the strains of piano sonatas, opera arias and throaty jazz renditions accompanied the cooking.

It can only be said that an excellent time was had by all.
