Zukiswa Wanner Wrote London – Cape Town – Joburg in Obsessive Three-week Burst of Writing

London - Cape Town - JoburgZukiswa Wanner reveals that she wrote her latest novel, London – Cape Town – Joburg, in an “obsessive” burst of writing.

Wanner was born in Zambia, to a South African father and Zimbabwean mother, and has lived in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Hawaii and England. She currently lives in Nairobi, Kenya, but tells Business Day she “self-identifies” as South African, and her writing reflects her spiritual home.

After the light touch of last year’s Maid in SA: 30 Ways to Leave Your Madam, Wanner says London – Cape Town – Joburg contains “much more social realism”, and after developing the ideas in her mind for some time, she wrote the novel remarkably quickly:

“I’d been planning and researching the novel for a long time but wrote it in about three weeks with very little sleep.

“It felt obsessive but I just had to get it down because the darker aspects were very disturbing to write. As the mother of a young son myself, it was heart-wrenching — as if this had actually happened to us.”
