High Buns and Suzelfies – A Warm Welcome for Suzelle at the Joburg Signing of SuzelleDIY: The Book

SuzelleDIY

It was a dark and stormy night. Beaming tweens milled about the shelves of Exclusive Books Rosebank, shooting occasional jittery glances at the door, waiting for the guest of honour to arrive.

For the longest time, book journalists at an undisclosed book news website longed for the day when Suzelle DIY would bring out a book, if only to justify the hours spent watching her videos on YouTube as “work”.

SuzelleDIYSuzelleDIYAt long last, that moment has arrived!

Last night, young DIY enthusiasts and their eager parents braved the Joburg traffic and stormy weather to meet the one and only Suzelle.

Armed with smartphones, tablets and other nefarious recording devices, at 6 PM sharp the hordes descended to get her coveted signature in their copies of SuzelleDIY: The Book (available in Afrikaans as SuzelleDIY: Die boek).

When Suzelle walked through the doors of EB Café, everyone gasped. Calls erupted through the crowd: “It’s Suzelle!” “I’ve seen all your videos!” “I’m standing next to Suzelle!”

The queue snaked all the way around the coffee counter and into the corridors of the Rosebank Mall. Suzelle sat down to start the signing: “Oh my gosh, let me pour some water so I don’t dehydrate!”

Somewhere in the room, a selfie stick malfunctioned, but Suzelle was unfazed.

One thing that was definitely trending last night, was Suzelle’s signature hairstyle. At one point, it was difficult to see the DIY star amid all the high buns and flower arrangements:

Suzelle even got presents; some came in gift bags, while others were in the form of songs and Suzelle DIY impersonations. One thing that didn’t get old, was the #suzelfie.

“You know why I’m so good at taking selfies?” Suzelle asked one of her many fans. “I have long arms, I’m professional.”

The masses didn’t clear out until well after 7 PM, when even one very nonchalant and cool and not at all starstruck journo took the chance to take a #suzelfie:

If you, like Marianne, managed to get the dates wrong for the book signing, never fear! You still have many opportunities to meet Suzelle on her book tour in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Catch her tonight at Love Books in Melville, or at one of the super events scheduled for the next week or so.

Remember to take a #suzelfie!
